Biola AD Bethany Miller joined College.town’s Kristen Eargle to discuss the new brand identity, growth of the department and more as the Eagles are coming off of their second-best Directors’ Cup finish in program history. “A lot of it really has just been investing in people and thinking about how we model spiritual formation through sport, even in our staff and having that directly translate into how our student-athletes are growing.” More notable takeaways…

➤ The new look came up as a possibility during the 18-month process to form new core values: faith, formation and fierce. “That's part of the reason the feedback has been really great is because there's just really strong representation and people know and can see that we're still the eagles, we still have our red, and then we were able to add the blue that really shares the light of the Southern California sky, but also just that we represent and are training to be the light of the world and the way that we want to impact the world for Christ and train our students to be able to do that in their whole person.”

➤ On the decision to add women’s flag football, Miller points to data that shows a quarter of high school flag football athletes are in California and that the addition will line up with the sport’s debut at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. “So certainly for recruiting, it does make strategic sense to be able to launch this sport and kind of lead as one of the West Region schools. And also for our mission, we are a very early adopter for a Christian university, and so we are able to welcome that demographic as a covenantal school. So it made strategic sense for those reasons. We've developed a lot of spirit for our athletics programs across our campus. And just to have another team of 20 to 24 female student-athletes come on campus and be able to integrate their whole person development within our mission and vision is really exciting to us.” (link)

New York Yankees President Randy Levine sat down with Tulane Sports Law Director Gabe Feldman on the SportsWise podcast to discuss his role in shaping the Protect College Sports Act. Levine warned that a failure to pass the bill before the end of the year could have far-reaching consequences: “If this bill doesn't go through the House, I don't believe there will ever be a bill that goes through the House. I think this will be the end of it. I think you're going to have universities going bankrupt. I really do believe it. You're going to see Olympic programs and women's programs being shredded and cut." On his ongoing behind-the-scenes lobbying efforts in the House: "Yeah, it's been quiet, but it hasn't been quiet for me and my team. And we've been working this every day, every weekend, every night, trying to make the case. A lot of congressional people are campaigning and a lot of them are uneducated. The more they get educated, more they write like it. ... I'm actually working on a letter to go out to the house as we speak." (link)

College.town has released a new CollegeSports.jobs report tracking the college athletics job market, and Division II postings are up 26% through September 26 (263 to 331), with schools that posted in both years increasing their volume by 37%. Coaching continues to anchor the D2 market at more than half of all postings (54%), led by a surge in assistant coach openings, which jumped 81% (58 to 105). The administrative picture is more mixed, as Assistant and Associate AD postings fell from 23 to 13 and compliance postings were cut in half (20 to 10), while sports medicine grew 40%. Job descriptions are shifting too, with sponsorship and corporate partnership experience now cited in 15% of D2 postings, nearly double last year’s 8%. Notable from DIII: Pacific Lutheran football student-athlete Jackson Hale, former Claremont McKenna men’s basketball student-athlete Connor Printz and former Lynchburg dual-sport athlete Chris Jennings have filed a class action lawsuit against the NCAA over the prohibition of athletic scholarships in DIII. From the suit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California: “The NCAA has engaged in an ongoing conspiracy to fix the price of Division III athletic labor at zero by prohibiting every member of Division III, the NCAA’s largest division at more than 400 schools, from offering a single penny of athletic scholarship. … The Division III prohibition on athletic aid is undeniably a multi-conference agreement in Alston’s own taxonomy. Division III schools remain free to differentiate themselves along every dimension that does not fix the price of the labor that sustains the marquee recruiting tools that are their athletic programs.” (link)

Mercury Public Affairs SVP/Game Day Media Founder Alex Fulton has launched the new College Sports United PAC, per Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich. Registered with the FEC back on September 22, the PAC plans to utilize targeted advertising and direct voter outreach to specifically target opposition House members to pass the PCSA without amendments before the next session ends. Fulton: “Our goal is to ensure that the constituents in their districts understand the ramifications of their bad stances. We are going to go to the constituents directly to apply pressure to ensure that the voters know exactly why it is important that this bill passes the House.” He described those who have encouraged the PAC’s formation as “smaller Division I institutions’ boosters and donors,” adding: “Essentially, all the donors that we’re talking to in these smaller schools have been very, very vocal [about] having their seat for the university at the table.” While the PAC has yet to report any financial donations, Fulton noted it has received a “good amount” of pledges and “expects to collect its first funds by the end of this week.” More, including the Statement of Organization. Front Office Sports and Teamworks released the Teamworks State of AI in Sports 2026 report, revealing a stark disconnect between artificial intelligence adoption and measurable financial returns across the sports ecosystem. While 90% of sports organizations expect their AI usage to increase over the next two to three years and 79% expanded their investments over the past 12 months, only 15% can currently demonstrate clear ROI. The research, which surveyed 164 collegiate and professional organizations, indicates that fragmented, department-level purchasing serves as the primary operational bottleneck. Key findings…

➤ Organizations deploying AI against an organization-wide strategy report clear ROI at a 37% rate, compared to just 2% for those adopting tools one department at a time.

➤ Respondents cited integrating existing systems as their top planned investment (58%), while only 12% plan to replace a core system. Buyers prioritize accuracy (77%) and data security (65%) far above the sophistication of the underlying model (9%) when evaluating new products.

➤ Athletic departments historically purchased separate software platforms for different internal functions, leaving medical data in one system, scouting data in another, and performance metrics in a third. Because artificial intelligence requires unified data to function effectively, this software fragmentation severely limits the technology's ability to generate actionable insights. When an organization consolidates its data into a connected record (one to three systems), AI tools can analyze the complete athlete profile to produce a clear return on investment—defined by the report as measurable financial gains or definitively improved operational decisions—67% of the time. When that data remains scattered across a fragmented record (four or more systems), AI tools fail to connect the dots, causing the ROI success rate to plummet to just one in eight. (link)
