The DII Management Council has approved requiring schools to play at least one in-region, nonconference opponent in all sports that use NPI for selections starting in 2027-28. There will be a waiver process for schools that have scheduling complications. The council approved $4.18M in championship investments throughout the 2027-30 budget cycle that will now go before the Executive Board next week for final approval. Council Chair/Cal State San Marcos FAR Ben Cherry: “The council was intentional in balancing immediate championship needs with the flexibility to address future priorities, as opportunities present and initiatives develop. That approach allows us to strengthen the championship experience while remaining responsible stewards of the division’s resources.” (link) Other notable decisions…

➤ The council approved eliminated altitude conversions for track & field championship qualification starting in 2027-28 and backed noncontroversial legislation to allow staff to contact prospective student athletes during unofficial visits prior to June 15 before their junior year, provided they do not discuss athletic-related recruiting conversations.

➤ The council opposed membership put forward by the MIAA and GLVC that would allow men’s and women’s basketball programs to play their first season the Friday before the Monday 17 weeks before championship selections, as opposed to Monday, to allow programs to compete in region challenge events. The council cited additional demands on staff and facilities and expressed concern about how this would impact the Life in the Balance philosophy. Notably, the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Committees support the proposal to prevent multiple games within the same week and believe it aligns with the Life in the Balance philosophy to spread out competition and potentially reduce missed classes. The DI Membership Committee is recommending the DI Board of Directors introduce legislation to change the DI reclassification application fee to be “based on six times the amount of the estimated annual average value of direct benefits through distribution and championships made available to Division I members.” Here’s the thesis…

➤ “This recommendation reflects the committee’s conclusion that the current application fee undervalues Division I membership. The increased application fee is based on the fewest number of years that a reclassifying institution needs to move from entering the reclassification process to becoming fully eligible to receive DI revenue distribution. It more accurately reflects the value of Division I membership, retains the legislation’s existing refund provisions, mitigates the dilution of revenue distribution for members of the division and helps positions the division to address any championships-related pressures a larger division may face. Further, the increased application fee helps a reclassifying institution demonstrate its financial commitment to Division I’s philosophy, operating principles and student-athlete experience.”

➤ Currently, the DI application fee is $1.96M and is equal to the estimated annual average value of direct benefits. If approved, the change would apply to schools entering the reclassification process in 2027-28. (link, link, link)

Andscape’s Bradmond-Lee Harewood profiles the Tuskegee soccer programs, which kicked off their inaugural seasons this fall. The idea for soccer began in summer 2025 leading up to the FIFA World Cup, as AD Reginald Ruffin notes: “The World Cup this year really took this game to a whole new level, and I say the sky’s the limit. You’ve got to recruit great students, retain great students, and then you’ve got to repeat the cycle because — don’t get it twisted — this is about enrollment. This is about giving students a chance to be part of a team, be part of a university, and to get an education.” With the Golden Tigers to compete as DII independents for the next two seasons, SIAC Commissioner Anthony Holloman hopes more members add the sport with the goal of soccer being a championship sport by 2028. Wayne State (NE) rolls out its new strategic plan with five core objectives: Revenue Generation; Internal Support, Infrastructure, & Department Operations; Community Engagement, Marketing, Branding; Academics, Student-Athlete Support, Professional Development; and Competitive Success. The Wildcats’ foundational pillars: Academic Excellence, Student Health & Wellness, Competitive Success, Proud Tradition, and Community Impact. AD Mike Powicki: “This strategic plan is the direct result of an intentional, collaborative effort across our entire campus community. By bringing together the voices and perspectives of our student-athletes, coaches, athletics staff, and campus leadership, we have built a shared vision that truly reflects where we want Wildcat Athletics to go.” (link, link - full plan)

Point Park will add acrobatics & tumbling as its newest varsity sport. (link)

A new study of 5,235 colleges by the Hildreth Institute reveals that institutions in the same geographic markets publish markedly different living-cost estimates, complicating affordability assessments for prospective students, according to Inside Higher Ed's Joshua Bay. Here’s the deal…

➤ The analysis found that approximately half of the evaluated institutions reported allowances for indirect costs were more than 20% above local benchmarks, while higher-tuition and selective colleges frequently estimated miscellaneous expenses well below average rates.

➤ The discrepancies stem from varying institutional methodologies for estimating off-campus housing, food, and transportation, which directly dictate financial aid limits.

➤ Hildreth Institute Managing Director Bahar Akman Imboden emphasized how these inconsistent financial projections directly impact university enrollment and retention: "There is a very legitimate concern there that higher-cost living allowance could make an institution appear less affordable and potentially discourage enrollment. A budget that is too modest can make a college appear more affordable … so a student may enroll, even take out a loan based on this initial picture, only to discover that their actual expenses are beyond their means. If those financial pressures prevent students from completing, then we risk the most troubling kind of outcome of higher education, which is debt without a degree." (link)
