Salem promotes AD Alex Joseph to Executive Director of Athletics and Campus Life. (link)

Florida Southern AD Drew Howard and Indianapolis AD Kim Pate joined CSC Voices, Beyond the Scoreboard to dive into a number of topics. D2.takeaways…

➤ Howard on the brand refresh, which started with a fresh look from FSC’s president and VP of marketing: “I think we were losing a little bit of Florida Southern identity and making sure when someone saw our logos, our word marks, they knew exactly who we were. Not that there's a ton of Mocs out there running around, but we wanted to leave no doubt when you saw our stuff, you knew it was Florida Southern. It was an opportunity for us to tie in some new fresh colors, to pull back something that we had long forgotten in the ‘70s, some of the light blue that we've added in. … It was important to take care of and guard our brand so there was no confusion as to who we were, where we were located and what we were all about.”

➤ Pate on the role of athletic communicators in driving department culture: “I think our athletic communicators have one of the most important jobs in helping to shape and create our culture, our high-level culture, and our student-athlete experience because they're telling the story. They're telling the story of what that looks like and people are able to feel it and experience it through the different mediums. … I think they're not only just chronicling the success of our teams; they're really culture bearers and brand protectors and they're storytellers. They're helping shape and really protect our culture and certainly the student-athlete and game day experiences come to life really before it ever happens.” (link)

KBIA’s Emilia Hansen chatted with MIAA ADs about the Protect College Sports Act. Here are some of their most notable comments…

➤ Northwest Missouri State’s Andy Peterson: “We've kind of been in purgatory. We are waiting, and we have to react to what that level is doing because everything does trickle down. … I don't think that any of them are really concerned or worried about Division II or Division III athletics. I think it's just we're not innocent bystanders, but we kind of are just collateral on the whole thing.”

➤ Missouri Western State AD Andy Carter: “I know people will laugh at me if I say this, especially ones that maybe are at the higher level: we are still all about the educational opportunity and young people using sport to help them get their degree so they can go on and become better at whatever they decide to do. … I think the biggest crime in all of this thing is there's nobody representing the students. … And if we, in turn — and I say we athletics — in turn think the answer is to raise the cost of education for every student so that we can pay student athletes, again, think about that statement. That's not right.”

➤ Central Missouri’s Matt Howdeshell hopes the legislation’s rules around transfers will help bring back the four-year model and student-athlete development. “It's not perfect by any means, but it's a step in the right direction, and hopefully, it'll provide some stability. … I tell people all the time, you know, previously before the transfer portal, you used to be able to retain about 70% of your roster, and you'd see about 30% change. Well, in the last few years, that model has been flipped on its head entirely.” (link)

The most daunting challenge the Protect College Sports Act faces in passing the House might be the short window left to reach a finish line, per ESPN’s Dan Murphy, who notes the legislative body is scheduled for just 20 more working days spread across five weeks between now and the end of the year. “While that could be extended if lawmakers are debating high-priority issues such as a government funding deal, it's unlikely they would add time solely for the PCSA.” If the House can’t reach a vote before the end of 2026, the process would begin anew in January, and if Republicans lose control of the House in the midterms, “the likelihood of the current bill being revived is low.” More…

➤ Portions of the bill prescribing how often schools should schedule games with their rivals, how long the season should last and other items in a "grab bag of random things" in the legislation stretch beyond the role the federal government should play in a private industry, according to a House aide. Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) recently shared a similar sentiment in a statement to the Washington Sun: “It's really important that we allow the schools to govern themselves."

➤ A spokesperson for the Congressional Black Caucus, which remains staunchly opposed to the PCSA as written, says authors haven't been willing to engage in serious conversations with members or with other groups that represent the interests of Black student-athletes while crafting the legislation. “The CBC carries more sway in the House than the Senate -- 58 of its 62 members are in the House. The group played a major role in defeating a different college sports bill called the SCORE Act in the House last year. A spokesperson for the group said the CBC would also like to see university leaders, especially from Southern states, take a stronger stance against racial gerrymandering before throwing its support behind any bill that helps the college sports industry.” (link)

Last month, the California State University Board of Trustees approved expanding Cal State Monterey Bay’s Cardinale Stadium to include two new permanent locker room and restroom facilities and a new storage area north of the stadium to allow the venue to be able to host CCAA and NCAA championships and be the home for three new professional teams under its agreement with Monterey Bay Football Club. Colorado Mesa expands its partnership with Community Hospital to be the four-year sponsor of a new 28’x47’ video board at Stocker Stadium next fall. (link)

William Jewell will bring back men’s and women’s cross country under a new leadership structure, as HC Brian Cooper will oversee track & field and the Cardinals will work to hire a new cross country HC, with the program to launch in 2027-28. AD Ryan Erlacher: “The creation of a standalone head cross country coach position will certainly have a positive and immediate impact on our teams. I'm confident we will find a transformational coach who will be a great fit for Jewell.” (link)

It’s Personnel…
➤ Lee hires J&S Restaurants Director of Marketing Nicole Moorshead as Assoc. AD for External Operations. (link)
➤ Bemidji State brings back alum/Minnesota United Ticket Office Associate James Banfante as its new Asst. AD for Event Management and Internal Operations. (link)
➤ Central Missouri selects Director of Sponsorships and Sales Dalton Reynolds as its new Asst. AD for Annual Giving. (link)
➤ Minnesota State hires Oregon State (DI) Admissions Credential Evaluator Alexander Carew as Interim Asst. AD for Academic Advising and Student Development. (link)
➤ The NCAA taps longtime collegiate softball umpire Marty Abezetian as the NCAA Softball Umpire Program’s Director of Training and Video Review. He previously served six years with the program as the softball video services coordinator before spending two years as the first director of training and video review. (link)
➤ TNT Sports Chairman/CEO Luis Silberwasser is departing the soon-to-be merged Skydance company. Per CNBC’s Alex Sherman, CBS Sports President/CEO David Berson will lead a newly formed global sports group, consisting of the CBS Sports, TNT Sports and WBD Sports brands, that will oversee all networks, platforms and territories. Skydance will own a large swath of sports rights, including NFL Sunday afternoon games, all of March Madness, college football and more. (link)

Coaches Corner…
➤ Central Oklahoma Football HC Adam Dorrell resigns, effective immediately. AD Stan Wagnon: “This was a difficult decision, but we have a responsibility to the best interests of our student-athletes, the university and Coach Dorrel. His behavior Saturday night was inconsistent with the expectations we have of our leaders.” DC Cody Swanson will serve as Interim HC. (link)
➤ Menlo Women’s Soccer HC Matthew Kemp is no longer leading the program. (link)
➤ Tuskegee parts ways with Football HC Aaron James in the midst of his fourth season. Asst. HC Keith Higdon will serve as Interim HC. (link)

At its most recent meeting, the New England Commission of Higher Education “Accepted Focused Evaluation and Issued a Show Cause for Probation or Withdrawal of Accreditation for Institutional Resources” for American International. No other information was provided by NECHE. (link)
