The DII Management Council did not support the Championships Committee’s recommendation to establish minimum in-region nonconference requirements, citing the potential cost implications and the introduction of NPI this year. Also, the DII Executive Board “noted initial support for a policy that restricts institutions in conferences that play only a closed-conference schedule in a given sport (rather than seeking in-region nonconference opponents) to be eligible only for automatic qualification for selection purposes and not for at-large bids.” That will be a topic for the Championships Committee to discuss next month. The group is also planning to survey the cross country membership about potential changes to the current regional, all-comers approach and the possibility of a single first-round site. Should any recommended change come with a budget impact, it “could not be submitted until the next budget triennium beginning in 2030.” (link)

New Alaska Anchorage AD Michael Bazemore chats with Anchorage Daily News’ Josh Reed about his transition to leading the Seawolves, which he admits is “a little bit weird,” coming from GNAC peer Montana State Billings. “It’s new terminology (and) a new workflow. I’m in the process of getting my foundation together. It’s exciting, it’s new, it’s one of those things where if you want to progress, you gotta have patience because you want to be more efficient with everything. But you’re learning as you’re also navigating.” As for his vision for UAA: “I want to not only maintain that, but obviously elevate it so that you know when you look at (the) Seawolf logo, you know that that’s one of the premier athletic departments and institutions within our region. … I think everyone can get excited about that because when someone is coming in that is new, we can lend ourselves from a different perspective and get fresh eyes going to a particular area.” (link)

Eastern New Mexico AD Kevin Fite joins 365 Sports to discuss the hire of Football HC Art Briles as the Greyhounds are set to kick off their season tomorrow. “I had access to information that most ADs would not have. I'd worked with Art at the University of Houston (DI). I was also a member of the enforcement staff for a number of years. So I know people on the enforcement staff. I know people on the committee on infractions. I know how that process works. And I know how to read infractions or reports and really see what the issue was and how serious the issue was. So I just felt like I was better suited to make that decision than most. … My conversation was strictly with the president of the university and then he spoke to the regents. Then, when it began to break, 98% of everything we got was positive.” (link)

Embry-Riddle unveiled its renovated state-of-the-art strength and conditioning space with the help of Rogers Athletic. AD Rachel Burleson: “This renovation is about more than just a new weight room – it's an investment in our student-athletes and their pursuit of excellence. … We want to provide them with the resources, facilities, and support they need to compete at the highest level, both in the classroom and in competition. By continuing to invest in the student-athlete experience, we're raising the standard and giving our student-athletes every opportunity to become the best versions of themselves and compete as the best student-athletes in the country.” (link)

The NCAA approved a slate of technology and pace-of-play rules for the 2027 college baseball season, headlined by an experimental option allowing all three divisions to implement a challenge system for called balls and strikes. The updated rules also require a double first base for all games, permit larger 18-inch square bases and expand video review to cover fair-foul calls and all tag plays. The committee is also allowing conferences to test professional-style rules like a three-batter minimum for relief pitchers and a two-disengagement limit per at-bat. (link)

The DII and DIII Playing Rules Oversight Panel and the DI Men’s and Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country Oversight Committee approved a slate of rule changes for the 2026-27 track and field and cross country seasons, including a strict 30-minute warmup limit per flight for preliminary horizontal jumps and throwing events, which drops to 15 minutes for finals. The committees also mandated distinct barriers for cross country turns, permitted protests for suspected illegal shoes, and reverted equipment calibration guidelines to 2023-2024 standards. To protect competitive integrity, active coaches and enrolled track and field athletes are now explicitly prohibited from officiating meets involving competing schools. The updated policy also officially defines a flagrant action as an evident or decisive act that impedes another competitor. Finally, the rules committees across all three divisions rescinded optional indoor and outdoor team scoring proposals, delaying any potential implementation for at least another academic year.
