Key Industry News
The DI Cabinet approved revised notification-of-transfer windows and new infractions process rules aimed at curbing tampering and streamlining enforcement. Under the updated guidelines, FBS and FCS football will feature a 10-day transfer window beginning the first business day after Jan. 1, while women’s gymnastics gets a 15-day window beginning the Monday after its national championship and cross country/track and field will have a 15-day window following the conclusion of the men’s and women’s cross country championships, with an additional 10-day period at the conclusion of the outdoor men’s and women’s track and field championships. More from the DI Cabinet, which introduced a package of proposals to decentralize rule oversight across all sports, targeting potential adoption as early as January. The proposed changes would remove limits on countable coaches—restricting only off-campus recruiters as determined by sport oversight committees—while allowing schools to cover transportation, accommodations, and entertainment for prospects and up to four accompanying individuals during official visits. The College Sports Commission is conducting active, long-term investigations into between five and ten Power 4 athletic departments, including multiple College Football Playoff contenders, over “potential cap evasion and NIL-related violations between institutions, student-athletes and certain third-parties.” More. Next week, SEC presidents will consider restoring the league’s intraconference transfer policy that would require student-athletes to sit out a year before competing for an SEC peer. (link)
Expanding the College Football Playoff to 24 teams would fundamentally alter coaching evaluations, contract buyouts, and roster spending across college football, and On3's Pete Nakos caught up with search firm executives and other industry leaders to get a sense of how the new format would impact coaching turnover. An industry source on increased pressure for head coaches: "More accountability and less favorability in an expanded playoff with these 12 slots that are coming open up. It’s like, man, we know 12 was hard, but if you can’t get to the top 24? You’re kind of — I don’t want to use the word failure — but maybe you’re not the right person for this job. This happens on an isolated basis in the NFL, but there could be a guy that loses his job after going one-and-done in the CFP. It’s like the NCAA tournament for hoops teams. Making the tournament isn’t like a safe harbor." More. (link)
Missouri Football HC Eli Drinkwitz offers up some much-welcomed good news on the health status of Tiger student-athlete Johnnie “DJ” Jones. “Last night, DJ received his heart transplant, and his surgery went well. He is now recovering. We are incredibly grateful for the medical team who cared for DJ and for the donor and donor family whose extraordinary gift made this possible. Please continue to keep DJ, his family, the donor family, and his caregivers in your prayers as he begins the recovery process. We are so thankful for the incredible prayers and support from the entire Mizzou Family. We will continue to update you when we can.” (link)
